About this typing test

A one-minute test on common English words. Speed is reported the standard way — five characters including spaces counts as one word — and mistakes are deducted, so what you see is net speed rather than how fast your fingers moved. The clock starts on your first keystroke.

A number on its own does not tell you what to practise, which is why most people take a test, feel briefly informed, and change nothing. What is useful is knowing which keys are slow: almost everyone is fluent across the home row and loses their time on four or five specific letters out at the edges. The stats page maps that per key once you have played a little, and drills build practice from the worst of them.

How is the typing test scored?

Do I need an account to take the typing test?

No. The test runs without one. If you have named a player, the result is saved to your history and feeds your per-key profile; if not, it simply shows you the number and nothing is stored.

How long is the test?

One minute, starting from your first keystroke rather than from when you press start, so you are not losing time while you get your hands into position.
